A 1mm in size, young Aphid (Plant Lice) , got stuck when her antenna was caught in the sweet flowers nectar.

for all those who are concerned about what happened to this Cutie , you can see this next image Easy Prey (:

The technique is more or less the same in each one,
I use a Canon 450D with a combination of:
Full set of Extension tubes
Canon F2.8 100mm Macro lens
Reversed mounted Canon 1.8 50mm
(in that order)

I shoot inside a light box with one flash in order to flood the box with light, the extreme magnification with the flash and colorful flowers/backgrounds gives a very vivid result.

shutter is set to around 1/200
Aperture on the 100mm lens is on F14
(as a balance between a grater DOF (around 1mm) and still keeping it sharp (diffraction with this combination is very enhanced)
the 50mm lens focus is set to infinity, and the aperture is open wide.
focusing is done by moving the camera backward and forward, and the magnification is set by the focus ring on the 100mm lens.

I prefer shooting Aphids since they are pretty still and don't move that much or that fast, plus, since they are about 1-2mm so they can fit into the extremely shallow DOF (and they are extremely cute!)
the average magnification with this combination is around 3:1.

Thank you very much for DD and thanks for all the comments, faves and features!!! (:

ok I got it ! i visited the page yesterday but did not notice it.

so do you carry it in the field or you use it for indoor shooting only please ?

i try to get some very soft and detailed macro images with my 60mm on 550d and built in flash, which i diffuse by placing a white (roll film) plastic canister on top of it, but i cannot get so soft and detailed at same time. i also shoot in the sun mostly.

any helpful tips on that ?

I was wondering if it is better to use a diffuser disc to cast shadow on object and try to simulate shade for better detail but seems insects dont like this and leave :D

You can shoot early in the morning when the light is more even and there is less contrast.

what do you mean by oft and detailed?
